The telephone, it is no longer the method you use to speak to people, (in the literal sense that is!). It is now your calendar, note pad, message sender (text), internet browser, games console and a multitude of other apps that are available to communicate to the wider world. But what if you need to speak to just one customer or client, or specific potential prospects. Yes we return to the old faithful, the ‘I’ve been around since oh 1876’ the plain non singing (well some do) non dancing (except the Naomi Campbell and hotel staff incident of course) telephone.  Here are some top tips when speaking to new or existing clients on the phone;

  •  Always smile, your recipient may not be able to hear you, but your smile emulates through your tone
  • If you have rang more than 7 times and you still get nothing, take the no and if needs be revisit in 6 months as circumstances can always change
  • The person making the call should have all the relevant information to answer any simple queries and be knowledgeable on the organisation
  • Have notes but try not to read from a script, it can sound forced and unnatural
  • When keeping in contact with existing customers don’t say ‘just calling to touch base’ or a similar phrase, always have something of value such as ‘I was speaking to a colleague who had this idea and I thought of you’ any ideas you think would benefit their business

Last of all remember if you have sent out information via a direct mail campaign or email, always follow up with a phone call to close the sale, often your next customer is just waiting for you to ask for the business
