What is Telemarketing?

Telesales, telemarketing, cold calling, lead generation…I am often asked what the difference is between telesales and telemarketing. They are, after all, used quite interchangeably in the business world, but is there a real difference??

YES!
(You knew I’d say that didn’t you ;-)

Telesales refers to sales techniques used over the phone, mostly associated with cold calling. The term telesales has had negative press over the years, being linked to various foreign call centres and harassing techniques by the likes of double glazing in the past, to more recent PPI claims calls. However it shouldn’t be seen like this, many telesales companies and inhouse telesales staff provide an excellent service in bringing new products and services to those that need them.

On the other hand, telemarketing is the all encompassing notion of enhancing your marketing through, quite simply, the phone! Of course we love the phone here at The 4 Group. It enables us to record phone calls for mystery shopping purposes, allowing employers to listen to how their staff respond with customers. This all important feedback gives insight into a companies customer services and sales skills when speaking to customers and prospective new customers on the phone. The first point of call in many cases. Opportunities for further staff training are highlighted, and praises to those doing an excellent job increase staff morale and motivation. We also love the access it gives us to reach many people in a targeted and honed manner. This is especially important for the all important market research campaigns, as well as selling over the phone. You just don’t get that with an advert in the local press.

So what else does telemarketing include?
When you think of a company marketing its products and services many options come to light; leaflet dropping, mail shots (letters direct to targeted companies), e-shots (emails to targeted individuals), events and talks as well as social media and website links. Telemarketing services are a support of all your other marketing activity…Sending an mail shot or an e-shot, follow it up with a phone call to confirm interest and create another ‘call to action’. Arranging an event, invites sent out, phone with a reminder and confirm numbers of ‘bums on seats’ to remind invitees of the occasion and have a commitment over the phone immediately. Connecting with companies and people on social media, how about using the phone to arrange a face to face meeting and really start doing business together.

In a nutshell Telemarketing is here to tie all your other marketing activities together, and gain results with real synergy and a smile…oh yes and of course we are more than happy to help!
